I received an interesting email from a Sales Vault member recently. He wrote about how his 26 year old CSR is having tremendous success communicating with clients. They are actually replying to her emails.
Her secret? Brevity!
An order comes in via email. Her two-word reply: “Got it.”
If there is a question, she sends a one-sentence email. That’s it. Just one sentence. It is read and replied to promptly.
Another question, another one-sentence email.
Another prompt response.
This is not an attention span thing. It is an indicator that people are busy and are far more likely to respond to your message if it is short.
Uber short.
I am a human dichotomy on this subject. I hate it when people use 100 words if 5 will do, yet I am loquacious. I talk all the time to everyone and anyone standing near me, whether I know them or not. You know those Progressive Insurance ads that make fun of guys turning into their parents? That’s me. I have literally stopped a supermarket manager and said, “Dave in Produce? Doing a great job!”
<<sigh>>
They say you have 8 seconds to get someone’s attention. With that in mind, let’s all try an experiment: Keep your next customer communication to a minimum and check the result. If our new CSR sensei is correct, we can get the response we are looking for faster and more frequently.
Makes me wonder if I could have made this blog’s point in one sentence.
