Screw up. Own it. Be rewarded.
After a discussion about making and owning mistakes, a client shared a tidbit with me. She said, “I approached a table and admitted I’d forgotten to enter one diner’s meal. I apologized, told them it was being prioritized (not rushed), sent over two free appetizers, and left. I was so embarrassed. But, to my surprise, I received the biggest tip of my life from that table.”
Remember, in every problem there lies an opportunity.
Step one: Announce the error.
Step two: Apologize.
Step three: Fix any immediate need.
Step four: Own what’s yours to own.
Step five: After the crisis is over, do an analysis of what happened and make note of it for the next time.
Everyone will make an error. It’s how you deal with the error that separates a good company from a great company.
