A creative sales approach is sometimes needed in order to succeed in sales. Take the Post-it Note, for example.
Did you know that when 3M first approached office supply buyers, the response was essentially, “No one will use them.” So, a clever marketing department shipped one pad to hundreds of administrative assistants. What do you think they did when they ran out and wanted more? Yup. They called purchasing, who called 3M.
Then there’s Rick.
Prior to selling labels, Rick sold specialty beer. Unfortunately, it was at a time when specialty beer was not a thing. So, he was met with very little interest. Not to be denied, Rick took action.
Grabbing a bunch (like 20) of his buddies, he’d go into a bar or restaurant and they’d all order the same specialty beer. When the waitress told them it wasn’t carried, they’d get up and leave en masse.
What do you think the manager did when the boss asked, "How’s business?"
And that’s how Rick sold beer.
