Here’s a summer rerun for you (the topic, not the content)…
Having a tough time staying on task? Are you constantly interrupted? Is it suddenly noon, and then 2:00, and then 5:00?
Unless you work in a soundproof environment and have no cell phone or computer, you are prone to distractions.
Here are a few ideas to minimize and even eliminate the noise:
- Stick a note on your door: “Can it wait till 9:30 AM?” 99% of the time, someone will see the note, ponder their question or issue, leave, and then not return;
- Change your outgoing voicemail message to something like: “Hi, this is Bill and today is Monday August 4th. I'm going to be tied up till 9:30 AM. If it's urgent, press 0 and ask for XXXXXX. Otherwise, I'll call you back after 9:30." Here, you've given the caller all the information he or she needs: you're in today and help is available if you can or cannot wait;
- Shut off cell phone notifications;
- Shut off e-mail. Yes, shut off e-mail. Hey, do you want some undisturbed time or don't you?
OK, you have now controlled the controllable. The next issue is making the most of that undisturbed selling time.
But that's a blog for another day.
