Printing Impressions Commercial Printer News for June 2009

Attendees at the 2009 Offset and Beyond Conference, which kicked-off yesterday and takes place through Wednesday, May 6, are taking advantage of the advice and experience of some of the world's top business and print leaders. In addition to Printing Industries of America's stable of experts, key presenters at this year's event being held at Caesars Palace include Howard Putnam, the former CEO of Southwest Airlines. Putnam spoke about leadership in turbulent times.

PITTSBURGH—Michael Keene, president and CEO of Minneapolis-based John Roberts, will receive the Web Offset Association's 2009 Harry V. Quadracci VISION Award. Keene, a 2008 inductee into the Printing Impressions/RIT Printing Industry Hall of Fame, will be presented with the honor May 5 during the Offset & Beyond Conference at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The award recognizes a web offset printing industry executive who has "reached an unsurpassed level of excellence and achievement in the industry."

IF THIS magazine chose to hand out an award for the biggest newsmaker of the year, the 2008 honor would go to Quebecor World (QW), hands down. One might contend that the attention, while merited, is not the type of exposure a company would want: Financing issues, trying to sell an unprofitable venture and muddling through with bankruptcy in two countries. But Quebecor World is a printer for our economic times, the No. 2 in North America at a time when market leaders (Circuit City, AIG, Lehman Bros.) have come crashing down.

The Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF) is pleased to announce the installation of its 2009 Officers and Board of Directors. An installation ceremony took place on November 16, 2008 at PIA/GATF's Fall Administrative Meetings.
