For as long as it has been an option I have chosen to receive my bills and statements electronically. That is, up until yesterday. For the first time ever, I opted IN for receiving them by mail.
In a random check of my bank account balance I noticed a significant increase to my monthly health insurance payment. SIGNIFICANT!
I called all the appropriate parties and had it rectified, but only for moving forward. The money that was automatically sent to Blue Cross was gone...forever. It wasn’t their fault, or a clerical error that my policy had changed. It seems I MISSED AN E-MAIL (or two) notifying me to take action and update some tax credit information, and when I didn’t I was defaulted to the "normal" rate. Again I was dutifully notified by e-mail that this had been done, and again I didn’t see it since I use a separate e-mail for things like this so they don’t interfere with my work inbox. I haven’t been checking that e-mail frequently or responsibly, and I literally paid a price for that.
The first thing I did when I called Blue Cross was to ask for paper statements and notifications. My brain immediately equated paper with something important, and mail with something I wouldn’t miss. Then I discussed my account.
After all was back to normal, I realized something kind of interesting...I was totally reminded about the power of print from this experience.
I have worked with print most of my career and I thought at this point I was immune to the benefits for using it—especially since I am one of the print pushers. Sharing compelling reasons and great stories about using print, sharing creative print campaigns and helping to keep print fun and topical is my work, and work I whole-heartedly believe in. But it wasn’t until yesterday that this significant A-HA print moment really reminded me of the value of print as an official record.
I can’t be alone! Whether you had it 20 years or 20 minutes ago…when have you had a real personal connection with print? All A-HA moments are welcome!
