In September I wrote a column about environmental sustainability, saying that it is red hot and “everyone is talking about it.” It’s no longer just talk. According to “Outlook 2008,” a special report from B to B Magazine - The Magazine for Leading Marketing Strategists (www.btobonline.com), “going green” is becoming a mainstream goal for corporations. It identified green marketing as the most important marketing challenge that organizations will face in 2008.
Large corporations are pumping millions of dollars into positioning themselves as responsible. The widespread belief is that environmentally sustainable efforts will be rewarded by customers/consumers. So, of course the goal of these efforts

BUZZ WORDS come and go, especially at Graph Expo, where they’re here one year and gone the next. “Sustainability” is not a buzz word. It’s a commitment—and it’s here to stay. While printers and vendors alike were talking all things “green” at the show, much of the excitement was coming from paper and ink manufacturers, who have been at the head of the eco movement, having spent the past several years investing heavily in R&D on new lines of environmentally friendly products. Now, many of these suppliers have become pioneers and leaders in the ever-growing sustainability campaign. The following is a sampling of some
I study trends of major print media buyers. For the past few years, print buyers were most interested in learning about digital and variable data printing. While the interest in that topic isn’t waning, the hottest—and perhaps more ubiquitous—topic of interest is sustainability, including green printing and social responsibility. Sustainability is red hot. Everyone is talking about it.
The adoption of new technologies, workflows and solutions is typically slow, particularly on the printers’ side. Despite that history, we’re seeing evidence of very fast adoption as large corporations are moving quickly to create sustainability programs. An obvious target for these programs is print promotions.

Remember the good old days when life used to be simple and relaxed? I am not talking about farming a few centuries ago, but about the printing industry—and, more specifically, paper. No one questioned your paper choice on an ecological basis 20 years ago. There was virgin paper and virgin paper, and that was that. Then came the recycling wave (not the first surge in the ’70s, when you could hardly print on recycled papers, but the ’90s wave). Then there was a “real” choice—virgin or recycled—and often at a premium price. But, all this still seems like the good old days compared to
