COHOES, NY—11/15/07—The Environmental Protection Agency has once again recognized Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. for its commitment to the use of renewable energy sources. On October 22nd, the EPA presented Mohawk with a 2007 Green Power Leadership Award in the category of Green Power Partner of the Year. The annual award, which was presented at the Annual National Renewable Energy marketing Conference in Philadelphia, recognizes leading national green power purchasers for their contribution to helping advance the development of the nation’s green power market.
“Through our preeminent use of renewable energy products, we are doing our part to reduce our nations dependence on fuels that contribute to climate change,” says George Milner, Senior Vice President, Energy, Environmental and Government Affairs, Mohawk Fine Papers.
In 2003, Mohawk became one of the first large-scale production facilities in the U.S. to offset its electrical energy with a renewable wind energy certificate purchase of 4 million kilowatt-hours. Since then, Mohawk has progressively increased its level of purchase to more than 100 million kilowatt-hours annually. This represents 100% of the purchased electric use for all of Mohawk’s manufacturing, converting and distribution operations in New York and Ohio. This purchase has placed the company on the EPA’s National Top 25 list of green power purchasers as well as its 100% Green Power Purchasers list.
Currently, 100% of the electricity used by Mohawk to manufacture all of its papers is offset with certified windpower certificates. In addition, by offsetting the thermal energy emissions associated with the production of its entire Beckett Concept, Beckett Expression, Strathmore Writing and Strathmore Script product lines, these papers are effectively made carbon neutral.
