"Bill," she said, "You’ve got to let your personality out more."
Now, anyone who knows me will have to chuckle over the thought that there was a time when I held back at all. But a former Marketing Director was talking specifically about my writing personality. She was commenting on my blog in particular and it was the second best advice regarding blog authoring that I’d ever received.*
It’s a risky venture to just "be yourself" in any form, but given that the written word is FAR more powerful than the spoken word, writing your mind is akin to speaking your mind, only with more of an impact. And more permanence.
Up to that point, I was chugging along writing ho-hum blogs that were just okay. I would come up with a topic and spit out 250 words (the suggested length). Once I let loose, my subject matter became more interesting and a lot more fun to create. And readership went up. Feedback, too.
"Be yourself" in your blog, your writing, and even your voice mails. If you’re fun, be fun. If you’re serious and reserved, be that. You will find your audience. YOUR audience. But if you try to be something you're not, that insincerity will come across, too.
Go ahead, let the dogs out and let them run.
*BTW, the BEST blog advice I ever received was this, "It’s all about the blog’s title. Make it provocative and creative and interesting." Thank you Al Lautenslager!
