Do you remember the days when you were up at 2:37 am for reasons other than because you can no longer make it through the night without going to the bathroom...at least once? College kids do and one of them sent me an e-mail at 2:37 am last night. She’s signed up for one of my free training programs (time management) and mentioned the fact that she is considering Sales as a career. It gave me the chance to sell Sales and remember why it attracted me in the first place. As I recall, there were three reasons.
First, I remember wanting a job where I didn’t have to wake up to an alarm. I know that sounds weird, but the thought of RANT-RANT-RANT-RANT-RANT every morning at some ridiculous hour held no appeal whatsoever.
Second, I was interested in a career where I could earn according to my success, not because someone reviewed my performance and gave me a cost of living increase. Nope. If I rocked in my job, I wanted the reward. Simple as that.
Third, it was a lifestyle thing. I wanted a family and wanted to be there for them in a way that my dad wasn’t. Great guy. Love him to death (turns 87 on the 24th). Not around a lot. Recently, my 20-year-old daughter said to me, “You are like the most involved dad ever.” Mission accomplished.
Sales rocks. There is nothing better. You work hard to make it and harder still to stay on top but the benefits can’t be beat. So, my college friend, study hard and finish up your final year. Then, pick up a few books on Sales and join us at the cool table.
