The popular gala will feature recipients of the Franklin Award for Distinguished Service, Power of Communications Awards, and a John Peter Zenger Medal.

Gamma Chapter of Gamma Epsilon Tau, the national graphic arts honor society, will present its 2009 Gold Key Awards to Diane Romano and Russell K. Hotzler.

THIS SUMMER has involved much more travel than I would have liked, but has resulted in some interesting bits and bytes that I thought I’d share with you. After recovering from Drupa, I was off again to Las Vegas for EFI Connect. Frankly, Las Vegas is not one of my favorite destinations, but I suppose if you must go, the Wynn is the place to stay. It is a lovely venue and a great place to hold meetings.

REMEMBER VARICK Street? It used to be teaming with printers, until Trinity Church Real Estate—with extensive holdings on Varick—opted not to renew many printer leases about 10 years ago. Alas, the real estate boom eroded a fine tradition, as many shops were forced to relocate. But New Yorkers are tough, no doubt about it, and have the survival skills to meet challenges. And thrive. According to the PIA/GATF, in its 2006 estimate for state print markets, New York ranked third in the nation for printing shipments at $12.3 billion, trailing only California ($15.3 billion) and Illinois ($12.9 billion). NEW YORK CITY—Printing Industries Alliance (PIA) will hold its 2008 Franklin Event on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 (5:30-9:30 pm, note new extended closing time) at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers, New York City. Delivering the news to a room of more than 50 top industry executives at Manhattan’s famed Friars Club on May 15th, PIA President Tim Freeman noted that more than 500 CEOs and senior executives from the printing, advertising, publishing and graphic arts related sectors are expected to attend.
