Carlson Craft Reduces Staff by 114

NORTH MANKATO, MN—Carlson Craft, part of the Taylor Corp. chain, has trimmed its workforce by 114 positions in an effort to align business with economic conditions, the Mankato Free Press reported. Barb Kaus, general manager of Carlson Craft, said that consumer needs "have migrated to our solutions that are more technology enabled," according to the paper. The wholesale printing company provides stationery products and personalized accessories.

Press Fire Strikes Quad/Graphics WV Plant

MARTINSBURG, WV—Firefighters battled through the night to douse a press fire and clear out thick clouds of smoke at Quad/Graphics' plant here. No injuries were reported, but the smoke caused about $100,000 worth of damage, according to The Journal of Martinsburg, WV.

Slumping Transcontinental to Lay Off 250

MONTREAL—Transcontinental Inc. is laying off 250 workers above the 1,500 cuts announced earlier this year, The Canadian Press is reporting. The move comes on the heels of its C$144.3 million loss for the second quarter of 2009, compared to a net profit of C$36.9 million for the same period the previous year. The company expects to generate C$100 million in cost savings with the streamlining of 1,750 jobs, which represents about 13 percent of its workforce.

DG3 Elevates Saggiomo to President, COO

JERSEY CITY, NJ—The DG3 Group (DG3), a provider of global graphic communication solutions, has promoted Tom Saggiomo to worldwide president and COO. He will also join the firm's board of directors. Saggiomo will continue to report directly to Dr. Michael Cunningham, who has assumed the position of chairman, and will continue as CEO of the company. Saggiomo joined DG3 in 2008 as president of North America, with overall responsibility for DG3’s North American division.

Angstrom Graphics Adding New Presses

HOLLYWOOD, FL—Angstrom Graphics, the former St Ives U.S. division, has started up a second new Komori System 38S web offset press in its facility here. According to Wayne Angstrom, chairman and CEO of Angstrom Graphics, the installation and startup process has "exceeded expectations by hitting all performance metrics within a four-week startup window." Two additional web presses are planned within the next year to complete the web platform modernizing effort in both Florida and at Angstrom Graphics Midwest in Cleveland.

DAYTON, OH—WorkflowOne, which provides business process outsourcing services for print and promotional marketing, has signed a six-year, $40 million contract with health care provider Memorial Hermann. WorkflowOne will provide Memorial Hermann's 11 hospitals and numerous regional affiliates in Texas with forms, commercial printing, promotional products, warehousing, fulfillment and distribution, all managed by an onsite support team.

EPI Companies Closes its Doors

MARIETTA, GA—The EPI Companies, which ranked 112th on the 2008 Printing Impressions 400 list with sales of $51 million, has gone out of business. A vendor of EPI Companies, speaking on the condition that he not be identified, told PI that the general commercial and direct mail printer had closed its doors recently.

Small Fire Strikes New York Printer

NORWICH, NY—A fire broke out at Sun Printing last Friday night when the exhaust fan on a press overheated and set a nearby pile of paper waste ablaze, according to The Evening Sun. None of the 16 employees on duty were injured. Employees were able to douse the flames with fire extinguishers but the Norwich Fire Department needed to dismantle the chimney from the building's roof to ensure the fire was out, the paper reported.
