After costing creditors $6 billion and its stockholders another $2 billion, newsprint giant AbitibiBowater wants to shed its past by changing its name to one selected by employees. The company expects to announce its new moniker in the fall after culling through more than 1,400 recent suggestions from employees, according to ForestTalk. Too bad it didn't ask its customers, former employees, investors, or creditors. We could have offered some colorful suggestions that don't entirely leave the past behind.

Faced with this dour reality, USA Today announced on Friday the most extensive reorganization in its 28-year history. The paper will eliminate about 130 jobs, or 9 percent of its work force, and shift its business model away from the print edition that has become ubiquitous in airports, hotels and newsstands across the country.
The paper’s focus will now be on its digital operations. It will emphasize breaking news on its Web site, aiming to post articles within 30 minutes of a breaking news event. It will create a stand-alone sports edition called USA Today Sports.

BOSTON—Sappi Fine Paper North America will permanently cease operations at its coated fine paper mill in Muskegon, MI. The closing will impact 190 salaried and hourly employees, who have been on furlough since the suspension of operations announced last March. Sappi operated a single paper machine at the site with an annual production capacity of 170,000 metric tons. The company will record a charge of roughly $30 million in the fourth quarter.
SACRAMENTO, CA—Herald Printing, which prints newspaper inserts, grocery ads and coupon books, is closing Friday after 59 years in business, according to the Sacramento Bee. A total of 43 employees are impacted by the move. Owner Ralph Danel Jr. told the paper that he couldn't secure a bank loan to keep the business afloat. According to the Bee, Herald Printing posted sales of $26 million and employed 150 people at its peak.
