Franklin was a leading proponent of the use and acceptance of paper money. He helped revolutionize what essentially became the first form of security printing, which included leaf embossing, a practice so innovative at the time that other printers didn't know how it was done.
One display showcased just how incredibly labor-intensive printing was in the 18th century. It was a time of typesetting via a composing stick, and Franklin's personal stick was among the artifacts. The process included the use of ink balls, tympan, frisket, spindle and platen. The final product was literally hung out to dry.
