It was during those early years with his brother that Franklin began to showcase his subversive side. He would write letters to the Courant, using pen names like Silence Dogood, Busty Body, Dr. Fatsides and Historicus, to "poke fun at the pretentious elite and the follies of everyday life."
Upon finishing his apprenticeship, Franklin opened his own printing shop, where he published his own ventures, including the Pennsylvania Gazette and Poor Richard's Almanack. He was so prolific a printer that Franklin was able to bankroll acquaintances to start their own printing/publishing businesses throughout the colonies.
