ANDOVER, Mass. — September 13, 2016 — Standard Finishing Systems will once again occupy one of the largest spaces on the show floor, presenting an all-inclusive showcase of feeding and finishing solutions in partnership with Horizon International of Japan and Hunkeler AG of Switzerland. Standard’s focus is on workflow from creation to finishing, and how in-line, near-line and multi-function systems can maximize productivity with fewer steps and more output possibilities. Booth 1548 will host live demonstrations in diecutting, perfect binding and trimming, slitting and creasing, folding, saddlestitching, inspection systems and roll-fed print solutions, as well as North American debuts for a new diecutting system and enhanced web tracking and inspection tools.
Demonstrations from Creation to Finishing
Standard will produce a comprehensive range of finished products throughout the show, highlighting the short-run capabilities of individual systems as well as complete end-to-end workflows. Book blocks coming off of the Standard Hunkeler roll-to-stack system will be perfect bound and trimmed near-line to produce finished books. Elsewhere in the booth, pre-printed rolls will be turned into saddlestitched booklets, and a new diecutting configuration will demonstrate unique packaging applications. Still other samples will be creased on one machine and folded near-line on another to create greeting cards and a variety of other folded output.
“We are excited about the opportunities presented by the new venue and location of this year’s show,” says David Reny, executive VP at Standard. “Our goal is the same: to show a complete line-up of Hunkeler and Horizon feeding and finishing solutions that demonstrate flexibility, efficiency, and smarter workflows. Whether looking for a complete end-to-end solution or a particular piece of finishing equipment, attendees will find the full experience in the Standard booth.”
Standard Horizon Solutions Offer the Ultimate in Finishing Versatility
Designed to meet the growing demand for short-run diecutting, the Standard Horizon RD-4055 Rotary Diecutter can diecut, crease, perforate, slit, hole punch, and round corner in one process for both digital and offset printed sheets. Already a Graph Expo MUST SEE ‘EMS Award Winner, the newly updated RD-4055 is ideal for producing a variety of unique applications, including door hangers, table tents, CD holders, pop-up business cards, stickers, labels, and specialty packaging; even applications which require an additional folding process after diecutting such as boxes, pocket folders, and greeting cards. The system features easy change-over and simple operation via color touchscreen, and can achieve up to 6,000 cycles/hour on sheet sizes up to 15.74x21.65”. A repeat register function allows multiple-up applications from a single-up die to minimize costs.
Presented with the RD-4055 and making its North American debut is the new Dual Magnetic Cylinder, allowing for magnetic and pin-registered mounting of matching male and female dies, and providing additional creasing and embossing patterns to suit a wider range of substrates and light packaging applications.
Also featured will be the recently released Standard Horizon SmartSlitter, an all-in-one smart sheet processing system that can slit, gutter cut, edge trim, cross-cut, perforate, and crease all in one pass. The skip perforation feature can produce T- and L-perfs ideal for coupons, tickets, and business reply cards. The system is also capable of both matrix and rotary creasing, and for accordion fold applications or perfect bound books, up and down creasing can be performed in one pass. Print mark registration adjusts for image shift from sheet to sheet. The system also features a color touchscreen and a simple user interface for easy operation, including job setup via barcode.
Standard will also show a complete range of individual solutions for creasing, folding, bookletmaking, saddlestitching, perfect binding, and trimming, where innovative features take center stage to provide advanced automation, increased flexibility, and maximum productivity. Three different folders will highlight pharmaceutical and small-format folding, fully automated set-up including gap settings, lightning fast make-ready, and one-pass creasing and folding for digital print. A range of perfect binding solutions will be shown, featuring interchangeable PUR and EVA glue tanks, book-of-one production capabilities, and variable three-knife trimming.
A complete bookletmaking system with in-line creasing and bleed trimming will be producing professional quality, three-knife trimmed financial booklets, brochures, and calendars at speeds up to 4,000 booklets per hour. The system features format flexibility including 8.5x11” landscape capability, ideal for producing landscape brochures, photobooks or calendars. Additionally, a saddlestitching configuration will feature the Standard Horizon StitchLiner in-line with collating towers, producing true saddlestitched booklets with full bleed trimming at speeds up to 11,000 two-up booklets per hour.
Standard Hunkeler Presents Unique Roll-fed Configurations with Enhanced Web Inspection
Standard Hunkeler’s enhanced WI6 system is the latest innovation in inspection and tracking software, ensuring error-free print quality through continuous monitoring of the printed web for quality-related checks such as color registration, front-to-back registration and matching, variable content reading and grading, print marks, logos, pictures, and jet-outs. The new space-saving, integrated design employs compact CIS (Contact Image Sensor) technology for high-end quality and integrity control, and can be combined with the new and improved Hunkeler Site Manager for flexible production reporting and tracking at one or several lines, at the job, document, and sheet level. This solution is able to detect and record any integrity exception including duplicates and missing pages and documents, and can generate a wide range of production related reports as well as driving needed reprints. Hunkeler’s sheet level tracking solution improves production workflow and efficiency at an affordable price.
At the show, the WI6 system will be running on Standard’s continuous-feed saddlestitching solution, a roll-to-booklet configuration that pairs the Standard Horizon StitchLiner 6000 saddlestitcher with Hunkeler’s UW6 unwinder and CS6 rotary cutter to produce up to 6,000 high-quality booklets per hour at 600 ft./min. with fully-automated set-up and variable sheet-count bookletmaking.
Standard will also showcase a roll-to-stack solution to deliver book blocks for perfect binding. The system features Hunkeler's unique AutoRegister to automatically divert blank pages and accurately register to the print marks, and the Hunkeler LS6 non-stop stacker with improved vacuum control. The configuration runs at up to 500 ft./min. to produce straight and fully separated book blocks 3-up from a roll. Book blocks will then be transferred for near-line finishing on Horizon perfect binders and trimmers to demonstrate easy set-up and changeovers with single person operation.
Additionally, Standard will show a range of applications in partnership with key digital and inkjet print manufacturers including Canon, HP, Ricoh, and Xerox to demonstrate highly integrated feeding and finishing solutions.
Vision Based Inspection Systems
The “VIVA” suite of vision-based inspection systems — custom-designed for document integrity, quality control and verification in production environments — will be shown at Graph Expo. VIVA cameras for sheet-level and set-level integrity checking will be mounted on the Standard Horizon HOF-400 Sheet Feeder paired with the SPF-200L Bookletmaker. VIVA software will also be checking book block and cover matching on the Standard Horizon BQ-470 Perfect Binder. The VIVA line can be deployed across a broad range of Standard solutions to ensure quality control, integrity, tracking, and complete document reporting.
Partners Extend the Workflow
Standard’s broad portfolio is supplemented by strategic partnerships that further streamline production and enhance capabilities. Standard will demonstrate Automated Production Tracking (APT) from Ironsides Technology on the roll-fed saddlestitching line with the Hunkeler WI6 Web Inspection System. The APT solution has been fully integrated with the WI6 System for robust track-and-drive capability, flexible report creation, and dynamic data exchange with the customer’s host system.
Standard is also offering Impostrip from Ultimate TechnoGraphics, a powerful imposition automation software tool with Dynamic Templates that lets customers quickly and easily impose jobs with all necessary integrity and control marks for a range of roll-fed and cut-sheet applications, including book impositions for the Hunkeler PF7 Plowfolder, the Horizon Smart Binding line, and the Horizon SmartStacker. Additionally, several Standard Horizon machines will be connected to the Horizon pXnet digital workflow system to create a completely automated JDF production workflow, including scheduling, equipment setup, job status, and reporting.
