Sheridan to Close Former Times Printing Facility, Impacting More Than 100 Workers
The end is near for the former Random Lake, Wisconsin-based Times Printing Co., a four-color magazine, catalog, and commercial printing facility founded by Henry and Flora Scholler in 1915 as a community newspaper and operated by four generations of the Scholler family for nearly a century.
Times Printing, which was ranked 125th on the 2015 Printing Impressions 400 with $42 million in annual revenues, was sold by the Scholler family to Nicholas Karabots’ Kappa Printing Group in May 2016. That transaction followed the death of longtime owner Ray Scholler, who died in September 2015 at age 97. Ray Scholler was a 2002 inductee into the Printing Impressions Printing Industry Hall of Fame.
Brainerd, Minnesota-based industry powerhouse CJK Group acquired the 324,000-sq.-ft. Times Printing facility in 2021, which was eventually renamed Sheridan Random Lake. On Sept. 22, CJK Group notified the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development that the non-unionized magazine and catalog printing plant closure — which will be completed by February 28, 2026 — will impact 104 workers employed there starting Nov. 21st, 2025.
Times Printing had served the retail, consumer, and special interest markets, including B2B, travel and leisure, comics, and fundraising industries. The heatset web and sheetfed offset printing facility also handled a variety of finish sizes, including digest, tabloid, slim jim, and oblong.
Shifts in Catalog and Publication Markets
Laura Baker, director of marketing for CJK and Sheridan, told Printing Impressions that the decision to cease operations at Sheridan Random Lake result from evolving industry conditions, “with catalog production declining as retailers increasingly move toward digital marketing, and magazine publishing adjusting to smaller print runs, reduced advertising revenues, and the growing shift to digital editions.
“Despite significant efforts to attract new work suitable for that facility, the overall decrease in demand has necessitated this difficult decision,” she said, noting that work performed in Random Lake will move to existing Sheridan locations prior to the end of November.
“We are encouraging those who have been impacted to pursue open positions at other Sheridan facilities and plan on offering job-search assistance to those unable to do so,” Baker added.
