Quad Shifts Investments to Pewaukee
SUSSEX, WI—Quad/Graphics is investing $25 million to bolster its direct mail services division, QuadDirect. The outlay includes new digital and offset presses, high-speed envelope inserters and commingling machinery, as well as significant upgrades to its Pewaukee, WI, plant.
The facility will be transformed into a state-of-the-art, direct mail production facility, including a digital pressroom.
QuadDirect’s gain is a loss for its West Allis, WI, facility. The printer scrapped plans for a 192,000-square-foot addition at West Allis, after studies revealed it would cost more than originally estimated due to soil conditions that would require additional foundation work for the building, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Quad’s Claire Ho told the newspaper that the driving factor behind opting for Pewaukee was its larger space, which will allow the company to get the enhanced operations running quicker and not have to wait for building construction to be completed.
Quad is also closing Openfirst (acquired in 2006), and moving those employees to the Pewaukee plant upon completion of its enhancements.
At the recent Drupa printing exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany, Quad purchased nine thermal CTP devices from Kodak.
