GPO'S Longest Serving Employee Marks a Milestone
WASHINGTON, DC—June 2, 2009—Virginia Saunders has been Keeping America Informed for more than six decades. She recently celebrated 64 years of federal service. Saunders started as a clerk typist at the F.B.I. in 1945, before spending the last 63 years working at the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO). The majority of her GPO career has been involved with Congressional work. Since 1969, Saunders has been responsible for the Congressional Serial Set. This publication is a case bound compilation of all House and Senate documents and reports for each session of Congress.
"Virginia's enthusiasm is contagious," said Public Printer Bob Tapella. "Her contributions to GPO and our nation are truly remarkable. She has given her life to federal service and I think she's an excellent role model for all employees at GPO."
"I never thought I would thank the good Lord for work," said Virginia Saunders. "Retirement has crossed my mind, but what else would I do? This is where my heart is."
The GPO is the Federal Government's primary centralized resource for gathering, cataloging, producing, providing, authenticating, and preserving published U.S. Government information in all its forms. GPO is responsible for the production and distribution of information products and services for all three Branches of the Federal Government. In addition to publication sales, GPO makes Government information available at no cost to the public through GPO Access (www.gpoaccess.gov), and through partnerships with approximately 1,250 libraries nationwide participating in the Federal Depository Library Program.
