Gold Ink Awards Entry: Mohawk Maker Quarterly Looks at Importance of the Medium
PHILADELPHIA — March 24, 2016 — This 2016 Gold Ink Awards entry was submitted by Mohawk Paper and entered into the Specialty Magazines, Sheetfed, category. The Mohawk Maker Quarterly #8 focuses on stories of small manufacturers, artisans, printers, designers and artists who are making their way in the midst of the digital revolution. The latest issue uses vivid colors, artwork and stunning photography to convey how the medium is just as important as the message in creating the ideal experience for an audience.
The 25,000-copy run of the magazine was produced by Clifton, N.J.-based commercial printer Sandy Alexander on an eight-color Heidelberg CD sheetfed press. According to Mohawk, Sandy Alexander strategically integrated flourescents into this piece to enhance the color.
Paper used on the various pages of the magazine were from the Mohawk Strathmore and Curious Collections. Multiple colors were also used on some of the pages with three hits of opaque white plus four-color process; four hits of opaque white plus four-color process; four-color process plus PMS Pink; and four-color process plus PMS Red.
Some of the special effects included using white ink on deeply colored paper in combination with CMYK, and successfully incorporating Strathmore deckled-edge Pastelle to demonstrate the tactile and memorable impact of printing on a highly textured, deckled-edge paper. UV and conventional inks were also applied.
"Printing on eight unique textured papers posed a challenge, but the printer [Sandy Alexander] stepped up to the challenge and did an amazing job of managing the project and combining UV and conventional offset to achieve spectacular results," says Chris Harrold, vice president of business development and creative director at Mohawk.
