School District Nets $70K in Print Savings
FRANKLIN, IN—In an attempt to reduce spending in an era of drastically cut state budgets, Franklin Community Schools lopped off 20 teaching positions, a half-dozen administrative posts and other staffers. The school system, in trying to save nearly $3 million with an enrollment of just 5,000 students, found another outlet for savings that commercial printers are well aware: consolidation.
The victims of the consolidation—photo copiers and computer printers. According to WTHR-TV 13 in Indianapolis, the school yanked 500 such machines from classrooms and offices. The school district expected to save $35,000 by doing away with printing that is deemed unnecessary. David Clendening, district superintendent, said the actual figure would eclipse $70,000.
Printing and copying are now done on centrally located machines that can track teacher and employee usage, along with costs. Clendening told WTHR that the savings are equivalent to the starting salaries of two new teachers or a half-dozen teacher aides.
