250 Print Workers Impacted in Unrelated Layoffs in Illinois and Colorado
A “mass layoff” at an LSC Communications transportation center in Bolingbrook, Illinois, and the closure of a OneTouchPoint commercial printing plant in northeast Denver — both slated for September — will result in the layoffs of 180 and 70 workers, respectively.
Warrenville, Illinois-based LSC Communications filed a WARN Act notice with the state of Illinois on July 9 that it will permanently lay off 180 employees at its LSC Communications Transport LLC (doing business as Enru Logistics) transportation facility in Bolingbrook, Illinois, on September 5.
It follows the sale in April of the co-mailing portion of the LSC-MCL co-mailing and co-mail logistics business to Sussex, Wisconsin-based Quad. That transaction included all MCL co-mail related manufacturing assets, technology, and its commercial book of business. However, the sale to Quad did not include the logistics portion of the business.
Magazine and Catalog Business Sold Last Year
In February, 2024, Brainerd, Minnesota-based CJK Group acquired the assets of LSC Communications’ Magazine and Catalog business unit, along with the stock of Kodi Collective LLC (formerly known as Continuum Marketing Services LLC). The assets and stock purchase together represented “Kodi Collective.”
At the time of that sale, Kodi Collective comprised five offset printing facilities and three digital printing facilities, as well as a marketing execution services business,
The “mass layoff” of 180 workers at Enru Logistics in Bolingbrook marks the latest chapter in the dismantling of LSC Communications, which itself was a spinoff in 2016 of Chicago-based RR Donnelley (RRD) into three separate publicly-held companies. LSC Communications would eventually file Chapter 11 after its planned merger with Quad was blocked in 2019 by the U.S. Department of Justice on antitrust grounds.
LSC Communications’ assets were then acquired by Atlas Holdings in 2020 — the same private equity firm that waged, and eventually lost, a contentious bidding war with fellow private equity firm Chatham Asset Management for control of RRD less than two years later.
OTP Denver Site Closure and Mittera Deal
In an unrelated announcement, Hartland, Wisconsin-based OneTouchPoint (OTP) is closing its Denver printing plant on September 12, impacting 70 workers. The local transactional accounts of the Denver facility were divested to Mittera, which is headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa.
As part of the divestiture, production equipment from the OTP Denver operation will be relocated to OTP’s printing facilities in Hartland and New Berlin, Wisconsin; and Tempe, Arizona.
“Our decision to align the Denver facility’s local transactional accounts with Mittera reflects our proactive approach to adapting in an evolving marketplace,” OTP CEO David Holland said in a prepared statement. “By shifting our focus to investments in technology and our Centers of Excellence, OTP can continue to meet the evolving and complex needs of our enterprise clients across digital, print, and omnichannel communication platforms.”
Mittera plans to onboard key OTP staff members to ensure a smooth transition. "We’re honored to be entrusted with these client relationships as OTP sharpens its focus on enterprise-level accounts," Jon Troen, CEO of Mittera, added in the same announcement. "Our team is built for moments like these — with deep experience in print, powerful tech integrations, and a hands-on approach to client success. We see this not just as a transition, but as the beginning of a strong partnership — both with the customers we’re welcoming, and with OTP as we support their strategic direction."
OTP provides brand management, commercial printing, and fulfillment services to more than 3,000 brands, including Fortune 500 companies in the manufacturing, healthcare, healthcare insurance, financial services, alcohol and beverage, franchise. and retail industries. With the OTP deal marking its 25th acquisition, Mittera is a national provider of integrated and data-driven print, mail, and marketing services to a wide range of industries.
