Education and the E-Book: What Do Readers Tell Us?
Sponsored by: Canon Solutions America
Speakers: Naomi Baron, Executive Director, Center for Teaching, Research and Learning, American University
Half of American adults own an e-reading device. A few years ago, President Obama targeted getting e-textbooks into every classroom by 2017. Some states have passed legislation requiring e-book adoption for public schools. Nevertheless, there is still controversy relative to the educational impact on students and the overall learning process. In this webinar, we will hear from Naomi Baron, Professor of Linguistics at American University. With her new book entitled Words Onscreen: The Fate of Reading in a Digital World, Baron is bringing fact-based data to the case for print. Baron and her colleagues surveyed over 400 university students in the U.S., Japan, Germany, Slovakia, and India. She found a surprising preference for print, especially when students wanted to concentrate.
During this webinar, Baron will share her insightful research findings. The discussion will include:
·An overview of the e-book market
·A consideration of publishers’, distributors’, and educators’ motivations
·A review of research, with a focus on the perspectives of readers themselves
·Recommendations and conclusions
