3-D Printing Could Be a Money Tree for the Ailing U.S. Postal Service
July 8, 2014

According to a new report, The United States Postal Service thinks 3-D printing could be a financial boon for the agency.

The white paper, which was released Monday (July 7), is from the USPS’ inspector general office. It speculates that as 3-D printing becomes more popular, the USPS would make money in various ways, one of which is due to cost-savings by not having to spend as much money transporting items over large distances.

How Big Data and the Internet of Postal Things Project Will Change the Postal Service
July 3, 2014

In the future, according to a report released in May by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (OIG), "the convergence between the increasing amount of actionable data, the ubiquity of network connectivity to integrate and share this data, and the rapid development of analytics may open up a new world of opportunities for postal operators—the "Internet of Postal Things."

The possibility of equipping the postal network (vehicles, mailboxes, mail pieces and parcels, sorting centers, etc.) with low-cost sensors will exponentially expand the capability of postal operators to collect valuable data. This new rich data sources could help

Subtle Violations of Postal Regulations Can Cost Mailers Millions, Two Recent Lawsuits Reveal
June 30, 2014

The U.S. Postal Service assessed Southern California Edison $7.6 million in penalties for not keeping its address lists up to date and Sears $1.1 million for allegedly violating the rules governing how folded self-mailers should be sealed, according to the lawsuits.

The two companies filed appeals of the USPS decisions on June 18 with the U.S. District Court in Washington. Both are represented by Venable LLP, a major Washington, DC law firm.

Will Eric Cantor's Defeat Sink the Postal Delivery Plan?
June 13, 2014

A funny thing happened to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on his way to pushing an aggressive June legislative agenda that included a modified postal delivery schedule. He lost his Virginia House seat in this week's GOP primary election to economics professor Dave Brat.

The surprising defeat led the The Washington Post to opine that House legislative activity would now cease, as Republican members would “avoid doing anything—literally anything—that could be used against them” in their mid-term reelection bids this summer. Today, Cantor stepped down from his House leadership position.

Quad/Graphics' VP of Postal Affairs Looks at Postal Pricing Adjustments for 2015
June 13, 2014

The United States Postal Service (USPS) exigent price increase went into effect on January 26 of this year. Since then, there has been a great deal of discussion and debate as to whether or not the increase should be permanent. No matter the final decision, the timing of the 2015 CPI adjustment will likely be affected by the outcome of the debate so the USPS can avoid having to adjust prices more than once during the year.

We expect one price increase in 2015, and that should be the annual CPI adjustment (currently 1.471 percent). Only Congress could change that

Will House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's Defeat Sink the Highway-Postal Delivery Deal?

It's Time for Postal Unions and Mailers to 'KISS' on USPS Reform
June 9, 2014

The (following) editorial from “an anonymous PostCom board member” appeared in this week’s issue of PostCom Bulletin, the organization’s newsletter. I thought the insights about how to get postal reform moving and about the U.S. Postal Service's governing body were worth sharing with a wider audience, so I’m republishing it with the permission of PostCom.

A few explanations are in order: “FERS” and “CSRS” are the pension plans for postal employees. “RHBF” is the U.S. Postal Service’s Retiree Health Benefit Fund "PAEA" is the law governing USPS pricing and other financial matters.

Oh, and for those who don’t know...

The Monopoly That Haunts the U.S. Coated Paper Market Is the USPS, Contends Industry Analyst
June 6, 2014

The U.S. Department of Justice seems likely to force NewPage and/or Verso Paper to divest at least one paper mill, Verle Sutton wrote this week in his subscription newsletter The Reel Time Report. DOJ is concerned that combining North America’s two largest makers of coated paper would give the new company the power to drive up prices.

The bulk of coated paper purchased in the United States ends up in the U.S. Postal System in the form of catalogs, magazines, direct-mail pieces, etc. But what really hurts is that customers are making strategic decisions knowing that USPS’s future is in the

USPS May Delay Next Price Increase if 4.3% Exigent Portion Rate Increase Expires
June 3, 2014

The U.S. Postal Service is thinking about foregoing its usual January price increase next year. It’s not that postal officials have suddenly been afflicted with a case of generosity after jacking up most postal rates by more than 5 percent earlier this year. They’re merely preparing for what happens when (or, rather, if) the temporary 4.3 percent “exigent” portion of the recent rate increase expires.

“The Postal Service could delay the next rate adjustment so as to coincide with the rescission of the exigent surcharge,” USPS noted in a filing yesterday with the Postal Regulatory Commission.
