BEIJING—A Chinese food manufacturer is in hot water with the government for printing over expired sell-by dates in order to make the food appear fresh and sellable, the Xinhua news agency reported. Douqule Food Factory used chemicals to remove the true production date from packages before adding a later date.
The scam was uncovered after a pair of production employees who burned their hands while using paint thinner to change the package dates sued Douqule for compensation. According to Xinhua, China has been marred by a number of food safety scandals in the past few years, ranging from toxic milk to dyed buns.
