LONDON—OK, so it seems not every printing error turns out to be costly. Sometimes, a gaffe can represent big bucks in a niche market.
A sheet of 20 stamps, the 19 1/2 pence British Motor Cars issued in 1982, fetched nearly US$17,000 at a Stanley Gibbons auction in the United Kingdom, according to Auction Central News. The sheet featured a previously unrecorded 'double gray' error that ghosted images of the automobiles, impacting 12 of the 20 stamps.
