Happy Hanukkah from Affinity Express! On this last night of the holiday, I thought I’d share some of my family’s traditions, which are by no means traditional! The reason I say this is that I am not actually Jewish. My husband is and my children have been raised as both Jewish and Christian. That makes for a lot of work for me in December with multiple holidays to celebrate! Hanukkah is a festival that celebrates a miracle when the Maccabees, a small band of Jewish fighters were victorious in liberating the Land of Israel from the Syrian Greeks who occupied it. The Greeks sought to impose their Hellenistic culture and Antiochus defiled the Temple in Jerusalem and banned Jewish practice. The Maccabees waged a three-year campaign that culminated in the cleaning and rededication of the Temple—Hanukkah means “dedication.” When they first arrived at the temple they found a jug of pure oil that should have lasted only one night but miraculously burned for eight.
