Rochester Institute of Technology Shutting Down Web Press

May 3, 2012

ROCHESTER, NY—May 3, 2012—A Sunday 2000 web offset press consigned to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and its Printing Applications Lab (PAL) is being dismantled and sold after 10 years of service, according to the school's student-run Reporter magazine.

The Reporter quoted Bill Garno, director of the lab, as citing several reasons behind the School of Print Media's decision to unplug the venerable press, including the onset of the digital printing age. Additionally, the research clients that previously funded its operation dwindled, and the behemoth press was taking up valuable real estate.

The lab reportedly will continue to operate digital presses from Kodak and HP, but six of the 13 full-time PAL employees will likely be out of jobs. Goss will be looking for a buyer to obtain the press, which originally carried a $10 million price tag. Garno told the publication that the sale process could take up to 10 months.

Neither Garno nor a representative of Goss International could immediately be reached for comment.
