Intro to Selling Profitably
By Harris DeWese

This blog series is derived from a book—"A Year of Selling Profitably"—I wrote several years ago. In this session, we will review the five most common reasons salespeople do not prospect, or do so infrequently and ineffectively...

The Sheridan Group Consolidating Publication Plants

The printing operations of United Litho located in Ashburn, VA, will be consolidated into Dartmouth Printing's facility in Hanover, NH. According to the Washington Business Journal, 80 jobs will be eliminated as a result. Sales and customer service staff will continue to operate in the Dulles/Ashburn, VA, area to support customers…

The Right Way to Call Print Buyers
By Margie Dana

My last PI blog post dealt with print buyers screening sales calls. It doesn't mean your calls won't be returned—just that you'd better leave something memorable in that voice mail. The last thing I want to do is put words in your mouth when you call a prospect…

Job Hunt Often Hardest On Older Workers

Many older workers who get laid off face additional obstacles, and Ron McFadden, 60, is sensing that this may now be true of him. McFadden was ultimately a casualty of the Quad/Graphics printing plant collapse. While he worked there, it was called Quebecor, then World Color…

Quad/Graphics Making Super Bowl Programs

The nearly 1,300 workers at Quad/Graphics in Lomira (WI) are feeling a little more proud of their work these days. They're in charge of publishing the official Super Bowl program for the sixth consecutive year. There is a downside to the story. Because of the quick turnaround to get the programs out, many workers had to miss Sunday's NFC Championship (Packers) game…

House Votes to Stop Printing Bills—After Printing Hundreds of Copies of that Bill

In yet another example of how unintentionally amusing Washington can be, the Government Printing Office (GPO) was required to provide Congress with 325 copies of the three-page bill, according to the office of author Rep. Chris Lee, R-NY. The GPO typically prints between 325 and 475 copies of any bill or resolution, and this one was no exception…

By Gail Nickel-Kailing

Dick Kouwenhoven, president and CEO of Hemlock Printers, and his team set an audacious goal—to become the "greenest printer in the world." Hemlock did it! In 2010, Hemlock was named the "Most Environmentally Progressive Printer in Canada" for the fifth consecutive year…

Printing's Best Blogs Website Launched As Resource for Busy Graphic Arts Professionals

The Printing Impressions Group announces the launch of Printing's Best Blogs (, a handy Website that brings leading blogs of interest to graphic arts professionals together in one place. Topic areas addressed by the postings include Sales & Marketing, Business Management, Print Production, Mailing/Postal, Cross-Media, and much more.

The site features bloggers from the Printing Impressions (, In-Plant Graphics and packagePRINTING magazine Websites, supplemented by third-party blogs aggregated from sources such as industry associations, independent consultants and pundits, and other stakeholders.

Blogs are selected for their relevance to the printing and allied industries, combined with frequency of posting. The site is updated at regular intervals throughout the day, but the individual bloggers have posting schedules ranging from several times a week to a minimum of monthly postings.

"We realize that today's graphic arts professionals have limited time to search the Web for relevant content that will help them perform their jobs more effectively and stay abreast of critical industry information and trends," says Mark Michelson, editor-in-chief of Printing Impressions. "By presenting our industry's best bloggers all together, in a single, easy-to-navigate Website, printing industry professionals can quickly find blogs of interest.

"Just as our ink-on-paper magazines geared toward commercial, in-plant and package printers have become the go-to sources for pertinent news and information over these many years, we have maintained that same, trusted role for our audiences within the world of electronic communications," Michelson adds.
