Magazine Launches Outnumber Titles Folded in First Nine Months of 2010
NEW YORK CITY—Oct. 12, 2010—New magazines continued to launch in 2010, with 176 new magazines in the first nine months of 2010, compared with 259 new magazines in the same period of 2009, according to www.mediafinder.com, the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications from Oxbridge Communications.
Magazine closures slowed down in 2010, with 127 magazines folding in the first nine months of this year, compared to 383 folding in 2009, according to MediaFinder. In addition, the move to online-only magazines continued, with 26 print magazines converting to online only formats in 2010, but down from 64 in 2009.
Food magazines are the top category for new launches in 2010, with 24 new titles, including Northeast Flavor. The Regional Interest category was another winner with 14 new magazines, such as Bel-Air magazine.
The home magazine category declined in 2010, with 12 magazines folding, including Home Miami. In addition, the Sports magazine category showed a decline, with 11 ceased titles, including regional editions of Competitor magazine..
Among business-to-business magazines, 44 titles folded during the same period, such as Manufacturing Business Technology. At the same time, 29 titles launched, including Sustainable Engineering. Business magazines also continued to turn to online only formats, with 14 print publications moving to online-only formats (such as Florida Real Estate Journal).
