Throwback Thursday, how times have changed
How times have changed. In 1847 there were 15,146 post offices and the post office delivered 124,173,000 pieces of mail. By 1947 the number of post offices had increased to 41,751 and 37,427,706,000; that is 37 billion pieces of mail were delivered. Interestingly, in 2014 the number of post offices decreased to 26,669 while the number of pieces delivered went up to 155,375,000,000.
It is interesting to note that while the number of post offices has decreased the number of pieces in the mail has increased by over 100 billion pieces or 400%. It would seem that the mail is not going away anytime soon!
