How times have changed. In 1847 there were 15,146 post offices and the post office delivered 124,173,000 pieces of mail. By 1947 the number of post offices had increased to 41,751 and 37,427,706,000; that is 37 billion pieces of mail were delivered. Interestingly, in 2014 the number of post offices decreased to 26,669 while the number of pieces delivered went up to 155,375,000,000.
