I am always impressed with the athlete who reaches the pinnacle of his or her sport and then manages to stay there for as long as their body allows it. Consider tennis stars, for example. It is quite an accomplishment to be number one in the world. I mean, where you go from there? So to stay number one for week after week, you have achieved something almost as difficult.
Recently, the picture circulated of Pablo Sandoval, who has been a complete bust of the Boston Red Sox after signing the contract that will take care of Sandovals for generations to come. The picture showed a fit and trim Pablo. He was almost unrecognizable. When asked about his disappointing year, he talked about embarrassment and becoming complacent.
Success brings with it a curse. We in sales strive to be number one. When we start out, we are trying to build our business with no thought whatsoever to what happens when we get there.
No one ever tells us about The Curse.
So, now that you know what’s going to happen when you reach success you can start preparing immediately:
- Stay focused on the activities and let the results take care of itself;
- Remember that your source of motivation will change;
- Have a strategy for reaching your goals.
Starting out is hard.
Getting there is harder.
Staying there is the hardest of all.
