We’ve all seen it: a car window rolls down, a cigarette butt arcs into the street, and we immediately recognize it as pollution. The act is visible, personal, and undeniable.
What makes that moment so viscerally powerful is that we see it. We can assign a face and a moment to the act. Our brains are wired to respond to visible, proximate damage.
But what about the harms of modern technology that accumulate quietly over time, hidden from view? These consequences seldom attract notice, even among those who have dedicated their careers to responsible and thoughtful production.
That needs to change — and the printing and graphic arts industry has the ability and the experience to lead the way.
Ours is an industry that has spent decades building a culture of sustainability. We track waste precisely, scrutinize supply chains, and refine processes to reduce emissions and excess. From certified paper sourcing to efficient press operations, sustainability is not a trend in our world — it’s part of the professional standard.
Yet there is a growing blind spot: the environmental impact of digital systems and artificial intelligence.
When people generate AI-driven content, automate workflows, or experiment with generative tools, the conversation typically focuses on speed, cost, and creativity, not resource use. The energy powering those tools and the infrastructure supporting them remain largely out of view.
This isn’t carelessness; it’s a familiar pattern. As an industry, we’ve always managed what we can see and measure. What remains abstract tends to be overlooked.
But every digital interaction has a footprint somewhere. Vast networks of data centers power modern creative tools, consuming significant energy and requiring constant cooling. That cooling depends on water and infrastructure on a scale that resembles heavy industry more than office work. While the exact figures vary, the overall pattern is clear: these systems are resource-intensive, and their use is growing rapidly.
Here is what happens every time someone types a prompt into an AI tool:
"Create an image of a bunny eating a sandwich for a funny social media post."
Within seconds, that request is transmitted across the internet to a massive data center, where banks of high-performance GPUs begin performing billions of calculations to generate the image. While those processors are working, they consume electricity and they produce heat. In order keep functioning, they must be cooled.
After all – you do need your bunny image, and you need it fast!
How much water will it take to keep those systems cool? The numbers I have read are jaw-dropping. One article claimed that in 2025 data centers consumed enough water to fill 1.8 million Olympic-sized swimming pools.
That article also reported that if data centers were a country, they would be the world's 11th largest electricity consumer.
But it’s all acceptable because we can’t see it. Since we cannot see it, we do not scrutinize it.
Wait a minute! That doesn’t sound like us!
We are a profession that clearly understands lifecycle thinking. Sustainable print has never been just about paper; it’s about the entire chain — from raw materials to end-of-life.
The same mindset should apply here. Digital tools have lifecycles, inputs, and consequences, even if they aren’t immediately visible on the pressroom floor.
The printing and graphic arts community also carries influence beyond its own operations. We produce the materials that communicate sustainability and shape how other industries think about environmental responsibility. That role brings a degree of accountability.
At the same time, we are early adopters. This industry has historically embraced new technology quickly and effectively. That instinct is a strength — but without reflection, it can lead to unintended consequences.
The goal is not to step away from digital tools or AI. It is to apply the same intentionality we’ve long applied to our profession.
A practical approach can begin with a few simple shifts:
- Match the tool to the task. Not every job requires high-powered AI. Choosing the simplest effective method reduces unnecessary resource use.
- Recognize degrees of impact. Text-based automation, image generation, and more complex workflows carry different levels of demand. Awareness alone changes behavior.
- Ask better questions of vendors. Energy sourcing, infrastructure practices, and sustainability commitments matter — and clients who ask influence how providers respond.
- Expand sustainability thinking. If your organization evaluates environmental performance in print production, extend that thinking to digital workflows.
- Educate the next generation. Students entering graphic communications should learn that digital tools carry environmental footprints just as physical processes do.
There is, of course, a measurement challenge. The environmental costs of digital systems are not always transparent or consistently reported. But that is not new territory for this industry. Printing faced similar challenges in the past and addressed them by demanding standards, building certifications, and making sustainability measurable.
The same evolution is beginning to take shape for digital technologies. Professionals who ask questions now will help define those standards.
The cigarette butt remains a powerful metaphor — not because of its size, but because of what it represents. It reveals how easily we connect visible actions to consequences, and how easily we disconnect from those we can’t see.
The infrastructure behind today’s digital tools is expanding far beyond our direct line of sight. Its impact may be harder to quantify, but it is no less real.
This industry already has the tools to respond: systems thinking, a culture of accountability, and a history of adapting responsibly to new technologies.
The only question is whether we choose to apply them here — and make the invisible visible.
