Did you hear the one about the guy from Seattle with the crazy idea of having drones deliver packages to homes? His name is Jeff Bezos and...oh, you know this one?
When I first heard about Amazon’s plans, I laughed like everyone else. I’d just come back from a wedding in Pennsylvania where someone put a GoPro video camera on a quad drone and flew it way up in the air over the reception. I’d also just finished reading a book on the subject. All of that combined and made for great interest on my part.
Drones delivering packages? So cool!
The media LOVED it. Related stories were run for days on end. The idea was so out there, so different. I loved it for the same reasons but from a different angle.
What I loved about it was the insanity of it all. I loved the fact that Amazon was thinking and talking crazy. Will the idea ever really happen in our lifetime? I seriously doubt it. But with an equal level of seriousness, I bet something better will be born from this thinking process and because of this thinking process. Without someone thinking and talking crazy, that next brilliant idea would never have been born (whatever it turns out to be).
We spend a lot of time thinking about present needs of clients and prospects. We go to shows like GRAPH EXPO to find out what’s coming next. There are customers to call on and orders to enter and lots and lots and lots of things to do. Precious little time is spent for creative thinking never mind crazy thinking. Still, there is a need for us all to not only think outside the box but to leave the box entirely and think different, as Apple would say.
