My friend works for a company in Boston. At the Christmas party this past year, an intern’s date grabbed the mic and ended any question of whether or not she belongs on American Idol.
That poor kid.
He took a beating for days.
Sometimes, it’s what you DON’T do that can make a big difference in your life and career. Here’s an idea for what not to do that might just further your sales career ... and save you from a lifetime of “I remember when you ...” stories at your expense.
Last month, I celebrated the 35th anniversary of my first sales training class. How in the world do I remember that? Because I graduated from UMass/Amherst in 1982 and went to class 2 weeks later. Simple math. Even for me.
Before I left, my brother warned me, “They’ll be watching you at the social events to see how you handle yourself. Have a drink, but just one. Stories and reputations never die.”
Oh, how right he was. I’m glad that I heeded that advice, then and now. I’ve seen my share of open bars and have the “Can you believe what he did?” stories to prove it.
That intern moved on and the plus-one he brought to the party is now a funny memory. But if you’d rather not live in infamy, I strongly suggest that you take Austin Power’s advice: Oh, behave!
