John Phillips, 41, an inmate at the Northern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility in Moundsville, WV received a certification in Offset Press Operations after passing an online standardized PrintED examination.

Valassis Nixes ADVO Deal LIVONIA, MI—Alleging fraud, Valassis Com­munications has sued ADVO in chancery court to rescind its $1.3 billion merger agreement. Valassis alleges ADVO intentionally provided false information and “withheld material information” regarding operating income. The suit also alleges ADVO executives knew of significant internal control deficiencies associated with ADVO’s order-to-cash system. ADVO sees the move as “merely a smokescreen to hide the fact that Valassis is suffering from an extreme case of buyer’s remorse,” and plans to contest the action. Gämmerler Corp. announced record orders for the second quarter of fiscal year 2001, reporting a 34 percent increase in orders over the same period the previous year. The high order volume was attributed to a number of new orders placed at PRINT 01, including sales to R.R. Donnelley & Sons for four of its plants, as well as to Shuttle Printing and Suttle-Straus. CM Acquisitions, a Chicago-based private equity firm, has agreed to acquire American Roller of Bannockburn, IL. The sale was effective as of December 28. MARTINSBURG, WV—Fueled in part by a new contract to print National Geographic, Pewaukee, WI-based Quad/Graphics has embarked on a two-year, $600 million expansion program. The contract calls for the monthly production of 9 million copies of the magazine, primarily at Quad's facility here, but with support from the printer's network of plants in Wisconsin, New York and Georgia. In preparation for the new work, Quad will invest in new equipment and hire approximately 700 employees at the West Virginia facility, nearly doubling that plant's employment. Additions at the plant will include an 84,000-square-foot pressroom, bringing total floor space at the facility to nearly 1.1 million
