New Equipment for D&B
NEW YORK—D&B Reproductions celebrated the new year by installing a bevy of new equipment. The new hardware includes a six-color, 40˝ Heidelberg Speedmaster CD press with extended coater and CIP3 technology, a Creo Trendsetter Spectrum CTP/digital proofer and HP Spinjet. The equipment was lifted into D&B Reproductions from the street through a second floor window.
KBA Directory Press for Verizon
LOS ANGELES—Dallas-based Verizon Information Services, the largest print and online Yellow Pages publisher and a unit of Verizon Communications, has ordered a KBA Commander directory press for its printing plant here. The press will print four-color telephone and address directories.
New Best Practices Guidelines
PARAMUS, NJ—The National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL), along with the Printing Industries of America (PIA), released the results of a joint study, "Best Business Practices for the Printing Industry," which covers topics such as terms and conditions of sale. The set of guidelines can be accessed through the members-only sections of the NAPL (www.napl.org) and PIA (www.gain.net) Websites.
Error Found in Vacation Guide
BISMARCK, ND—Only after a run of 200,000 North Dakota state vacation guides was printed did officials discover a slight gaffe, according to an Associated Press report. A page with the greeting from Gov. John Hoeven referred to the state as "N-R-O-T-H" Dakota. The mistake was caught before the guide was distributed, according to AP, and the mistake was fixed at a cost of $3,000, which was covered by the printer.
Presses Bound for Dartmouth
HANOVER, NH—Short-run publication printer Dartmouth Printing is reportedly the first printer to acquire Heidelberg Sunday 2000 web presses in a duplexed configuration. The 16-page systems can operate independently or they can be "duplexed" to produce forms of up to 32 pages. The systems include Ecoweb Plus dryers, Contiweb SH-40 splicers and PCF-1 pinless combination folders, all navigated through Omnicon control systems.
Eagle Merges with Eva-Tone
CLEARWATER, FL—Eagle Marketing Services of Ft. Collins, CO, is now a division of Eva-Tone, based here. Eagle Marketing specializes in developing direct mail, telemarketing and e-marketing campaigns, as well as providing creative services, list acquisition, database development and management, research, analysis and targeting. It has moved operations to Eva-Tone's Clearwater facility. Eva-Tone specializes in, among other things, printing, mailing services and fulfillment. It had been Eagle Marketing's primary print and mailing services provider for more than a decade.
Dingley Enhances Postpress
LISBON, ME—Catalog printer The Dingley Press increased postpress capacity with the installation of two new Heidelberg Pacesetter 1000 saddle stitchers. The acquisition of the stitchers, which can stitch up to 20,000 books per hour and are equipped for selective binding and ink-jet personalization, bring the company's total to 10 high-volume Heidelberg saddle stitchers. "We needed to bring postpress capacity in line with our press capacity, especially following the installation of a two-web Heidelberg Sunday 3000 that produces up to 100,000 48-page magazine forms per hour," points out Bill Braley, Dingley Press vice president of manufacturing.
St. Joseph Lands Publishing Plus
OTTAWA—ePRINT it, the digital division of St. Joseph Corp., has acquired Publishing Plus, which specializes in design, technical publishing and production support services. Established in 1990, Publishing Plus provides services in publishing, design and digital printing. St. Joseph is one of Canada's leading integrated communications and information management companies.
Graphic Converting Consolidates
NILES, IL—Graphic Converting (GCI) announced it will relocate its point-of-sale and P.O.P. display manufacturing from Fenton, MO, to its corporate facility here. The move is part of the corporate restructuring GCI began last October.
United Graphics Goes Sheetfed
BUFFALO, NY—United Graphics made the transformation from print broker to print manufacturer with the acquisition of a six-color, 28˝ Mitsubishi Model 1F-15 sheetfed press. United Graphics opened in March 2000 as a print broker before the installation of the 1F-15 press last October.
New Press for Graphics Group
DALLAS—The Graphics Group celebrated its 55th anniversary with a number of enhancements, including the addition of a six-color Speedmaster CD press. President Jan Brans also announced that Graphics Group, a member of the Consolidated Graphics network, was also remodeling and increasing its customer service and sales staffs. Brans also noted that The Graphics Group has installed a Polaroid Graphics PolaProof digital proofing system to help usher its transition to a completely digital workflow.
Creative Joins Total Package
EVANSVILLE, IN—The Total Package Co. announced that it has acquired fellow Evansville, IN, commercial printer Creative Press. The Total Package Co. was created to acquire packaging, label and related printing concerns and consolidate them into one company. Founded in 1946, Creative Press produces printed packaging components for the pharmaceutical industry, as well as specialty packaging for the entertainment, communications and nutritional beverage industries.
