MONTREAL—A new era in newspaper printing kicked off Monday for Transcontinental Inc., which began producing the San Francisco Chronicle at its new 338,000-square-foot plant in Fremont, CA. The facility will print 270,000 copies of the Chronicle from Monday to Saturday and 360,000 on Sunday.
The newspaper itself published an article on the dramatic improvement in its appearance due to the printing technology upgrade, erasing years of "poor color reproduction and annoying creases." Its three manroland web presses allow the publication to run color images on virtually every page, including section fronts. The newspaper also expects to woo more advertisers with the enhanced print quality, allowing it to remain competitive with other media.
