Keep US Posted Urges Incoming Postmaster General David Steiner to Pause July Postage Rate Hike Taking Effect the Day Before He Begins
Keep US Posted, a nonprofit advocacy group of consumers, nonprofits, newspapers, greeting card publishers, magazines, catalogs, forestry and recycling interests, and small businesses dedicated to promoting the value of postal mail and protecting the long-term health of the U.S. Postal Service, sent an open letter urging incoming Postmaster General David Steiner to assess outgoing Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s failed “Delivering for America” Plan. DeJoy, who resigned this spring, before moving forward with a massive postage increase set to take effect the day before Steiner starts July 14.
“For 250 years, the U.S. Postal Service has been a cornerstone of our nation's infrastructure, providing reliable and affordable mail service to every American — including those in the most remote and underserved areas which private couriers cannot reach,” wrote former Congressman and Executive Director of Keep US Posted Kevin Yoder. “However, many policies contained in DeJoy’s Delivering for America plan have resulted in significantly reduced services, delayed mail delivery, and a dramatic increase in costs for consumers and businesses alike. Among its destructive policies, the plan kicked off massive postage increases, which have occurred with unprecedented frequency and at amounts far above inflation — to the detriment of both the American public and the Postal Service, as mail volume which has consistently decreased with every rate hike.”
Yoder continued, “Despite DeJoy’s resignation, the Postal Service appears to be adhering to his failed roadmap by planning yet another massive postage increase on July 13, the day before your tenure as postmaster general begins. On behalf of Keep US Posted and our members, we urge you to call on the Board of Governors to freeze mailing rates until after you assume the role of postmaster general. We believe it is counterproductive for another postage surge to take place immediately before you undertake leadership of the Postal Service, as it will deprive you of the ability to thoroughly assess, and potentially rectify, one of the most destructive policies in DeJoy’s Delivering for America plan.”
