Dalim Software Users Group Elects New Officers at 2008 Users Meeting
SCOTTSDALE, AZ—April 10, 2008—Brent Kantola, Prepress Manager at Rogers Printing, and Stephen White, Specialist, Integrated Manufacturing at Vertis Communications, were elected President and Vice President of DUO respectively at the recently concluded US Dalim Software Users Organization (DUO) meeting, held March 19-20 at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens. Presentations included a corporate membership address and business review from Dr. Carol Werlé, Dalim Software CEO, a number of product and technology updates, business and technology sessions, and valuable presentations from Tom Carroll, EVP Chief Human Resources Officer, RR Donnelley and Dov Isaacs, Principal Scientist, Adobe Systems Incorporated.
DUO provides an unbiased collaborative channel of communications between Dalim Software users, Dalim Software staff, as well as authorized resellers, where ideas and knowledge are freely exchanged for the benefit of everyone. The organization establishes and expands the general and advanced technical understanding of Dalim Software products, learns of new product and service developments, suggests enhancements, and provides both the membership and Dalim Software a means of direct inter-communication. To accomplish this, the organization conducts an annual meeting, offers an electronic forum (http://forum.dalim.com), and freely shares ideas among members, along with other activities.
The keynote speaker, Tom Carroll, EVP Chief Human Resources Officer, RR Donnelley, delivered a participatory presentation titled ‘Managing Change.’ As Mr. Carroll warned at the beginning of the session, “Some learn by listening, some learn by watching, and some learn by doing. No one is safe from contributing to this presentation.” While the discussion was designed to help technologists effectively help to foster change, it had relevance to personal and working lifestyles, in general.
Dov Isaacs, Principal Scientist at Adobe Systems Inc., whose responsibilities include those for workflow and product interoperability issues associated with print publishing workflow products-and who serves as the “spiritual venture capitalist” for the Adobe Print Engine technology-discussed the value of PDF in print workflows and how certain print issues are resolved.
Other presentations included:
* An overview providing Dalim Software product and technology updates-featuring a review of the new DALiM ViRTUAL LiBRARY and new features for DALiM TWiST, DALiM MiSTRAL, DALiM PRiNTEMPO and DALiM DiALOGUE, due in time for drupa 08.
* An update of all Dalim Software industry affiliations, demonstrating the company’s support of the industry and its standards.
* Breakout sessions discussing business challenges and opportunities utilizing Dalim Software products and a Q&A of Dalim Software tools.
* Technology presentations of tips and tricks for more effective use of Dalim Software products, an annual favorite among users
* An open discussion about how new technological developments will change our processes in the future.
“I thought it was a very successful Duo meeting. Attendance was up, and we had 16 first-time attendees. Both guest speakers, Tom and Dov, were well received. Specifically, I was excited to hear that Dalim Software intends to use the Adobe(r) PDF Print Engine in their workflow applications,” remarks Brent Kantola. “While I personally want to deliver a tremendous ‘thank you’ to Lee Edberg of Brown Printing who, as outgoing president, did a great job to refocus our meetings, I am also looking forward to working with Steven White. For future meetings, I foresee more targeted technology sessions that address very specific user needs. For example, new users have different requirements than experienced users. Larger, multi-site printers have different issues than smaller printers. I would like to identify these groups, break out into smaller sessions, and participate in very beneficial dialogs.”
“I thought this year’s event was very interesting and relevant from our company’s point of view. Many of the areas of product development where Dalim Software is focused-for example, utilization of XMP and JDF and integration into other systems-directly relate to issues we’re trying to resolve or improve. And, Tom Carroll, the keynote speaker, was very inspiring. At first, when I looked at the agenda, I was wondering why an HR professional was addressing our group. What could he contribute? However, everyone thought he had a great deal of useful insights to help us gain consensus in our organizations for new technology projects,” comments Steve White. “As Vice President, I look forward to the challenges of making the US DUO meeting even more constructive next year. In particular, I would like to see more structure to the technology discussions. Saying that, I have to add that at this session, the five representatives from Vertis each received a year’s worth of new ideas to implement going forward.”
