Winners Take Podium at Georgia SkillsUSA Competition ATLANTA—The Printing and Imaging Association of Georgia (PIAG) announced the winners of the Georgia SkillsUSA graphic communications competition, sponsored by Heidelberg and held at its Print Media Demonstration Center in Kennesaw, GA. Through a grant from the PIAG Educational Foundation, the first place contestant was awarded $4,500 in scholarships and had the opportunity to travel to Kansas City to compete in the National SkillsUSA competition. Winning awards were: first place, Alyssa Ailion, a senior at Walton High School in Marietta, GA, who also went on to place second in the National SkillsUSA competition; second place, Victoria Gunnin,

Omaha Print Celebrates 150 Years With 150 Trees OMAHA, NE—To celebrate the company’s 150th anniversary, Omaha Print employees recently planted 150 trees here at Fontenelle Forest. As the Conservation Stewardship Sponsor for Fontenelle Nature Association (FNA), Omaha Print plans to continue to add trees to Fontenelle Forest yearly. Together, Omaha Print and FNA aim to preserve the biodiversity and ecological integrity of Nebraska lands for current and future generations. Hall of Famer Touts Large-Format Presses NORTH BERGEN, NJ—Edison Litho & Printing embarked on its “The Future of Your Business is with Edison Litho” theme at the recent GlobalShop show to promote the large-format printing capabilities of its two six-color, 81˝ KBA Rapida 205 sheetfed presses. Edison also showed visitors examples of plastic, canvas, lenticular and styrene substrates that can be printed on the Rapida 205 presses. While at the booth, visitors got the chance to meet Dan Hampton, a retired Hall of Fame Chicago Bears football defensive tackle and current radio personality. To help solidify branding and enhance name recognition, the Goodway Group of Companies, headquartered in Philadelphia, announced that its Massachusetts plant has changed its name from Goodway Graphics to Goodway Group of Massachusetts. Their sister facility near Washington, DC, has changed to Goodway Group of Virginia. In other company news, both the Massachusetts and Virginia plants are now FSC certified. The Print Council announced that GLS Companies, Brooklyn Park, MN; The Hickory Printing Group, Hickory, NC; Jet Inc., Downers Grove, IL; and Lake County Press, Waukegan, IL, have joined the organization. Themed Sales Contest Adds Political Spin STUART, FL—Southeastern Printing recently hosted an annual awards dinner and kick-off contest for its sales, production and management personnel. After awards were given out to several sales representatives, guests gathered in the parking lot to see who was arriving inside a black stretch limousine adorned with presidential seals and escorted by a police car. Out emerged President George W. Bush impersonator John Morgan, with two “Secret Service” agents by his side. After addressing the crowd and singing a few songs, the “President” announced the theme of Southeastern’s new contest, called “Decision ’08—You Can Make A Difference,” and

The Green Scene NEEDHAM, MA—Atlantic Printing is in its final stage of transition toward a “totally green” offset printing process. Atlantic employs a combination of chemical-free plate making technology (Agfa’s Accento thermal CTP system, which utilizes Agfa’s Azura chemical-free plates), 100 percent soy-based inks (a renewable source that is naturally low in VOCs) and recycled papers (the printer has obtained Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of- Custody certification). CANTON, MA—Several “green” initiatives, including garnering the Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification, have been implemented at Next Generation Printing. Stitch in Time Saves Nine NORWELL, MA—Smith Print, a full-service commercial printer in the greater Boston area, recently installed a Vijuk 321-T saddlestitcher equipped with six pockets plus cover feeder. The new stitcher was sold and will be serviced locally by Pasquariello Graphics. Frank Stanley, bindery foreman, and Tom Plourde, lead bindery operator, were involved in the final decision-making process and worked closely with Vijuk technicians during the installation and operational training.
