BOULDER, CO—Signature Offset, based here, is investing $3 million in a new Jacksonville, FL, facility that will open its doors in August, creating 30 new jobs, the Jacksonville Business Journal reported. The 34,000-square-foot building at the Port Jax Trade Center will provide printed products including collegiate newspapers and ethnic-targeted products.

BOULDER, CO—Signature Offset, a coldset web offset publication printing specialist with seven U.S. locations, has ordered a new Goss press to anchor a soon-to-open eighth site. The four-tower Community SSC press and N-40 folder with quarterfold capabilities will be installed at an undisclosed East Coast location this summer.

New UV Web Press Off to Big Start at MCW Printing LOUISVILLE, KY—After a year of preparation, MCW Printing debuted its new Manugraph DGM 440 web offset press equipped with UV curing capabilities. MCW is a publications printer and publisher that produces 45 monthly regional farming and equipment magazines. According to Philip Blair, general manager, pre-installation work included floor reconstruction, putting in new electrical transformers, installing a new air conditioning unit for the renovated pressroom, purchasing new software and numerous other upgrades. The Green Scene NEEDHAM, MA—Atlantic Printing is in its final stage of transition toward a “totally green” offset printing process. Atlantic employs a combination of chemical-free plate making technology (Agfa’s Accento thermal CTP system, which utilizes Agfa’s Azura chemical-free plates), 100 percent soy-based inks (a renewable source that is naturally low in VOCs) and recycled papers (the printer has obtained Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of- Custody certification). It will be fully operational by year’s end and is expected to cut turnaround times by about 50 percent. Another expected benefit is reduced shipping costs. Motheral Vies for Sprint Press FORT WORTH, TX—Motheral Printing has signed a letter of intent to purchase Sprint Press. The deal is expected to be finalized in the next 60 days. BOULDER, CO—08/29/07—Signature Offset’s printing plants in Olive Branch, MS., Las Cruces, NM. and Colorado Springs, CO. are boosting color capacity by adding three full color towers to their current press configurations. The Olive Branch upgrade was completed in August. Las Cruces and Colorado Springs are planning completion in September and early October, respectively. Journal Shutters Dixie Web MILWAUKEE—Dixie Web Printing, the New Orleans-based printing arm of Journal Communications hit by Hurricane Katrina, will not resume operations, the company announced in its third quarter report. Journal Communications said the decision was made due to softness prior to the storm, and the fallout resulting from Katrina—building damage, operating losses and uncollectible receivables. About 100 jobs were lost at Dixie. Graphcom Joining CGX Family HOUSTON—Consolidated Graphics (CGX) has inked a letter of intent to acquire Graphcom Inc., of Atlanta.
