PIA Names Winners of 2011 Best Workplace

PITTSBURGH—A total of 33 graphic arts companies were named recipients of the 2011 Best Workplace in the Americas Awards by Printing Industries of America (PIA). The winners were selected by a committee of human resources experts from within the industry. The program is designed to recognize graphic arts companies for their outstanding human relations efforts that contribute to a successful workplace.

The Diamond 3000LX sheetfed press is the third eight-color, 40" model Smyth Companies has purchased from Mitsubishi. It is being installed this month at the label printer’s plant in Bedford, VA, to accelerate job turnaround.

Two of the premier label printers in the country are now one entity as Smyth Companies of St. Paul, MN, announces the acquisition of Dow Industries of Wilmington, MA. “Walter Dow has been a long time friend whose company I’ve admired from afar, and I’m delighted that he has decided to tie the knot with Smyth,” said John Hickey, Smyth CEO.

The Label Printing Industries of America (LPIA) is pleased to announce the appointment of new officers to the LPIA Board of Directors for 2009–2010. Serving as chairman of the board is Randy Hicks, vice president of operations, WS Packaging Group/SenecaSalem in Franklin, PA. Serving as vice chairman is Bernie Lacy, vice president, Litho Press Inc. in Indianapolis. The secretary/treasurer position will be held by Louis Iovoli, vice president of sales and marketing, Hammer Packaging Corporation, Rochester, NY. William J. Hickey, III will serve as the immediate past chairman. Bill is the president & CEO of Smyth Companies in Minneapolis.

The Label Printing Industry Association (LPIA), a special industry group of the Printing Industries of America, recently inducted William Smyth Jr., of Smyth Companies, St. Paul, MN, into the LPIA Hall of Fame. The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF) recently completed a total revision of the competencies that form the basis for instruction in PrintED, a national accreditation program for graphic communications at the secondary and post-secondary levels. In addition, GAERF has begun developing a national exit exam for students in PrintED classes to accommodate its adoption as a state-mandated program.
