January 7, 2011 From Trish Witkowski
The new Baumfolder 714XA AutoFold, affectionately nicknamed the “Baby BAUM,” is an automated tabletop folder to be reckoned with. I was pretty surprised at its hi-tech functionality, and its ability to make fast and tidy gatefolds, tri-folds, double parallels and accordions.

October 2010 From Printing Impressions
Those lithographic printers walking the show floor earlier this month at Graph Expo in search of a bevy of heavy-iron, offset presses were sorely disappointed. With press manufacturers Heidelberg USA, Komori America and Mitsubishi Lithographic Presses opting to pass on this year's show, the South Hall at McCormick Place lacked the all-encompassing lineup of traditional press vendors that visitors in years past have come to expect.

New York Printers — Perceptions Cloud Reality
September 2008 From Printing Impressions
PERHAPS NO other state in the nation is as heralded and hated, lauded and lampooned, and adored and abhorred, as much as New York. But let’s be frank...99 percent of the ill will is directed at New York City. You don’t hear anyone seething, “I swear, those snobby Uticans really tick me off.” Likewise, no one has complained about the arrogance of those lousy Oneonta Tigers fans. The Big Apple! Musicians coined the phrase “Big Apple,” because when you played the Big Apple, it meant you played the big time. And we believe the hype. Frankie said it—make it there, make it anywhere. It’s

Special Drupa Coverage — Bindery Plays A Crucial Role
July 2008 From Printing Impressions
THOUGH SEVERAL of the press conferences and ”big news” at Drupa centered around digital printing, innovations in bindery and finishing were no less prevalent. In fact, many of them sprang from the very digital printing trends that overshadowed them. As digital printing speeds have increased, bindery equipment has also gotten faster, with vastly improved automation and simplified touchscreen controls to make them even easier to set up. JDF compatibility is becoming more common in bindery equipment, allowing devices to be preset using production data. Demands for higher-quality printed products have led bindery vendors to improve their paper-handling techniques. Folds look better on the latest

Floor-Model Folders -- Getting into the Fold
October 2004 From Printing Impressions
by chris bauer Managing Editor Once overlooked in a printing world that focused heavily on digital technology, bindery equipment, including floor-model folding machines, can now be part of the conversation. Modern machines offer all of the automation that today's users desire. According to Josef Niehueser, product manager for Stahlfolder (distributed by Heidelberg), automation and integration are the features that folding machine users want to incorporate. The bindery is the only production department left that still involves a degree of manual labor, he points out, and printers want to take as much labor out of the finishing process as possible. "Integration is the next

Paper Cutters -- The Winning Edge
June 2004 From Printing Impressions
By Erik Cagle Senior Editor What makes Jeff Gordon such a great driver on NASCAR's top stock car driving circuit? Sure, when he drives into Victory Lane, Gordon is deemed the race's fastest driver. But speed alone is hardly the reason Gordon gets to spray his pit crew with champagne. It is a confluence of variables that enable him to emerge victorious, namely the makeup of his car. Luck and patience play a role, as does tactical positioning on the track, but even the slightest flaw in the No. 24 car's mechanical composition can mean the difference between success and a short day at the track. Similarly,
