I was still scrambling as of this morning for what to write this week—I have been using a voice recorder app on my phone to record ideas as they fly into (and out of) my brain, but nothing was coming together, so I was just going to take a pass this week. But then I had breakfast with a friend and fellow writer and we were talking about all kinds of writing stuff, and I realized that I need to make more of a commitment to getting this piece in every week. So here goes...
I tried to take the girls ( two 3.5-year-olds) to church with me this Sunday. I honestly don’t know why I tried. Well, yes I do—I tried so I didn’t have to leave my husband with all four kids on Sunday morning. What I really don’t know is why I don’t leave them in the nursery that the church provides so that people like me can get a precious 60 minutes of grace and peace. I’ve never left them in the church nursery before and wasn’t sure when would be a good time to start doing so. And then it hit me.
There’s a First Time for Everything!
And so I wondered to myself, “Are there other people out there NOT doing something because they’ve never done it before and can’t really envision a way to get started and make the change?” And the answer I heard in my own head was, “UH, I’m pretty sure there are!”
So what are you NOT doing?
Are you NOT calling on a C-Level prospect because you’ve never done it before?
Are you NOT attending a networking event because you’ve never been to one before?
Are you NOT considering investing in new digital technology because you are afraid and you can’t see how it will fit in your mix?
Are you NOT playing in the social media pond because you don’t know a Tweet from a Tumblr?
And are you NOT blogging because you aren’t sure you have anything to say or that there isn’t anyone out there to listen?
Well, hell, it never stopped me!
But seriously folks, don’t let fear of the unknown get in your way. Everything we’ve ever done in our whole lives we had to do for the first time at some point, including walking, talking, reading, and any other scary thing we’ve ever done.
So what’s stopping you? The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Thank you, famous dude, for saying that. Just kidding. It was FDR.
