CGX Subsidiary Acquires Modern Graphics
MACEDONIA, OH—AGS Custom Graphics, a subsidiary of Houston-based Consolidated Graphics (CGX), has acquired certain assets of Modern International Graphics and Modern Logistics, headquartered in Eastlake, OH, near Cleveland. Terms of the deal were not revealed. Modern International Graphics ranked No. 308 on the most recent Printing Impressions 400 listing with $15.87 million in sales.
Valassis, News Corp. Reach Settlement on Lawsuit
NEW YORK—News Corp. announced it has settled with Livonia, MI-based Valassis Communications for $500 million in a lawsuit filed against the company’s News America Marketing (NAM) unit that was scheduled to go to trial in a Michigan federal court last Tuesday. The settlement also covers the $300 million Valassis was awarded in July in a Michigan circuit court that is currently on appeal and a pending state court case in California.
Goss to Sell Akiyama Presses in U.S., Canada
DURHAM, NH—Goss International has integrated the Akiyama International North American organization within its American operations, assuming responsibility for sales and support of Akiyama products, including Jprint sheetfed perfecting presses, in the United States and Canada.
RIT Aims to Bring U.S. Color Standards in Line
ROCHESTER, NY—Most printers in Europe prove compliance of quality color printing standards through a rigorous auditing process, but there exists no such certification process for printers in North America. To ensure North American printers achieve a color reproduction workflow that meets international printing standards, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) will develop and offer process audits and certification services to North American printers.
Canadian Printer Contac Obtains Forum Assets
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA—Contac announced its further expansion into printing with the acquisition of certain printing assets from Forum Productions, a commercial printer located in Delta, British Columbia. As a result of the deal, Contac is acquiring a wide range of printing equipment and technology, including a six-color, 40" sheetfed press; a four-color, 29" UV hybrid sheetfed press; a diecutter/foiler; and an assortment of other assets.
Larsen Assumes Senior VP of Sales Helm at KBA
DALLAS—KBA North America, a global press manufacturer, announced that Soren Larsen has joined the company as its senior vice president of sheetfed sales. Larsen, a printing industry veteran, will be overseeing the entire sheetfed sales force in North America. He will report directly to KBA North America President and CEO Mark Hischar as part of the executive management team.

Semper International is conducting its next quarterly Industry Insight Survey to help gauge sentiment in the graphic arts and print industry. The sharing of such information is particularly important during a period of economic disruption.

The big question still remains, “Will this hurt or help Print Media?” There is a lot of speculation, but it seems clear that with the iPad and Apple's new iBookstore we will see an explosion of book content shared via the Internet and not print.
