Greg Wayne, director of manufacturing for California Offset Printers (COP) in Glendale, CA, was the winning finalist in the third annual GATF/SGI Web Press Skills Competition. Sponsored by the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation, Sinapse Graphic International and MAN Roland, the contest used the SIR Heatset Web Offset Training Simulator, a virtual press, to present problem solving exercises. The Label Printing Industry Association (LPIA), a special industry group of the Printing Industries of America, recently inducted William Smyth Jr., of Smyth Companies, St. Paul, MN, into the LPIA Hall of Fame. The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF) recently completed a total revision of the competencies that form the basis for instruction in PrintED, a national accreditation program for graphic communications at the secondary and post-secondary levels. In addition, GAERF has begun developing a national exit exam for students in PrintED classes to accommodate its adoption as a state-mandated program. Susan Roberts has been hired as a sales representative for Padgett Press, Dallas. She covers the San Antonio and Houston areas. She joins the company from Quebecor World Printing. Karl Saionz has been appointed plant manager at Chicago-based Falcon Communications, a member of the Segerdahl Group. Prior to joining the company, he was the manufacturing manager at Booklet Binding. Rich de Senglau now heads K/P Corp.'s Northern California mailing and fulfillment division. A K/P employee since 1981, de Senglau is a veteran of the mailing industry.
