Although Wall Street mostly yawned when Quad/Graphics announced this week it is acquiring Brown Printing, the pending transaction is a big deal for many major publishers. Rather than trying to squeeze more years out of ancient equipment, as some Worldcolor plants used to do, Brown kept pace with Quad and RR Donnelley when it came to investing in new presses and bindery lines. But it wasn’t enough.

Master Press Operator at Brown Printing Recounts Changes He's Seen in Past 40 Years

Listening to Master Press Operator Gordon “Gordie” Frisk describe his nearly 40 years at Brown Printing, voice raised to combat the ever-present drone of the company’s sprawling Waseca complex, the advances that the complex trade has seen in the last four decades become immediately apparent.

“Now it’s all automation; back then there wasn’t any of that,” Frisk said.
