You’ll Never Know Until You Try
As a Mom of 14-month-old twins, it seems like every day brings a new “first.” They are now playing peek-a-boo, RUNNING and getting into everything. And I mean EVERYTHING.
As thrilling as these milestones are for me, I am also experiencing a few firsts in my own life, and I thought I would share them with all of you wonderful readers out there, in an attempt to inspire you to try something new yourselves.
Because here’s the thing...trying something new gets you out of your comfort zone. And very often, it can bring a new experience, new friends, new knowledge or even new BUSINESS. So if you have never been to a networking event, why not now? If you always wanted to run a 5K, sign yourself up! If you have been meaning to take that class at your park district on digital photography, snap to it!
I think you can see where I am going here. Change is hard, but it’s worth it.
To get the ball rolling, here are a few firsts for me this month, with some lessons I am learning along the way.
DRIVING TO MICHIGAN BY MYSELF WITH THE GIRLS. My Mom has been bugging me to bring the girls to her for a visit, so I thought to myself, “No better time than the present.” I am loading up the car tomorrow morning, and the three of us will make the 5.5 hour drive. Will it by challenging? Maybe. Will I have to stop five times, deal with screaming babies, and regret that I gave up fast food for lent? Probably. But I won’t know until I’m doing it, will I?
So I am going to make like Nike and JUST DO IT! Because one of my favorite questions to ask is, “What is the worst thing that can happen?” Now, I’ll be prepared with snacks and my GPS...and bail money. But if I don’t do this, I’ll never know if I CAN. Feel me?
TEACHING A CLASS. When the girls were six months old, I got pretty evangelical about making their baby food as opposed to buying jars in the stores. So I offered to teach a class on it at my library. Next thing you know, I have a time slot, (1.5 hours – sheesh!) and actual students. No turning back now. I have no qualifications other than being a Mom who wanted her girls to be as healthy as possible. I assumed there were others out there like me, and it turns out I was right.
SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS. I was contacted by a paper company to speak about ways to increase sales to their customers in conjunction with a new product launch. So this year at GRAPH EXPO, my partner-in-crime Bill F. and I will be giving a joint presentation. If you told me a year ago that folks would be PAYING me to talk, I might have laughed at you. A LOT.
Here is my point: If there is something you want to try, try it. If there is something you want to learn, learn it. If there is someone you want as a customer, GO GET ’EM, TIGER. And if you need help, get it. That is all.
