I’m gonna keep it short and sweet this week, because
after last week’s blog about the evil empire, I don’t want any more trouble from you people! So let’s take the discussion to something nice, safe and controversy free…Like Roller Derby.
I was in the roller derby. And I loved it. And then I left it, moved to the suburbs, got married, and had kids. But my beloved league still invited me to be honored with a trading card, because I was a founder of our league. So here goes.
I want to encourage you to use your personality to forge relationships with your clients and prospects. Our clients are still human beings and are drawn to that which is interesting about OTHER human beings. So try sharing a little bit about yourself when you talk to people.
I am not talking about bragging, or blathering endlessly about how your 13-month-old is a genius. But if you have an interesting hobby, share it. And invite your prospect to share something about himself or herself, too.
Personal knowledge about your clients and prospects will help you in subsequent communications, too. And, people DO still buy from people they like and respect, so if they KNOW you, they will be more likely to like you and want to do business with you—and even better, give you referrals.
We need to hold onto our humanity whenever we can. In a world of social media and digital communications, it is a great idea to remind people that you are a responsive, creative being that is there to help them.
And, if you were a badass in the roller derby, use that too. It got me more than a few new clients in my day. I guarantee it.
